Introduction of the Organization

Founded in 1948 with the support of UN, the International for Conservation of Nature, or IUCN, is an international organization for protection of nature and resources worldwide.

At first ICBP (International Council for Bird Preservation) was founded in the United States, Canada, Russia and Japan in 1911. Later in 1928, they organized the IUCN and set up a secretariat. In the aftermath of World War II, concerns over environmental degradation mounted, which led to an international conference in France. It was at this conference in 1948 that the IUCN was formally founded.

IUCN is committed to promoting global cooperation to manage resources and nature and to prevent extinction of plants and animals. It also strives to formulate and share strategies to preserve nature that serve as wildlife habitats or are particularly useful for research purposes.
