Access and Benefit Sharing : How to Implement the Nagoya Protocol?

Access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their utilization – in short ABS – constitutes the third objective of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). At the time the Convention was being negotiated, ABS was meant to take into account the need to share the costs as well as the benefits of biodiversity conservation between developed and developing countries and to find ways and means of supporting practices and innovations by indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs).
This Technical Session will analyse the issue of ABS in all its dimensions and provide a practical, hands-on, training on the implementation of the CBD’s Nagoya Protocol.
It is partly based on the Explanatory Guide to the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing. (Greiber, T. and Peña Moreno, S. et al., IUCN, Gland, Switzerland, 2012), which constitutes a recommended reading for all participants wishing to attend the session.
